Day out ideas in Darlington: Barnard Castle

Throughout this blog you will see why Barnard Castle is the perfect day out if you are visiting in Darlington or looking for ideas for places to visit.

Visiting Barnard Castle

Barnard Castle in Teesdale is a historic market town which takes its name from the castle around which it grew. The castle, an English Heritage property, was named after its 12th Century founder, Bernard de Balliol, and was later developed by Richard III whose boar emblem is carved above a window in the inner ward.

The beautiful castle is a must see when visiting Darlington, a nice day out for families who are encouraging their children to see history, people who are wanting a nice day out with amazing views of the beautiful castle, or just a nice destination for a picnic.

The grounds are open to anyone, even your furry friends (on leads of course). There are extensive lawns and a section of the grounds dedicated to sapling fruit trees.  Plenty of room to run and play, ball games allowed as well, at the safety of other people visiting. The family friendly castle is nothing short of educational and fun

You are welcome to bring a picnic to eat in the grounds which have fantastic views over the Tees Gorge. There are some picnic benches on site and in the garden.
