Dementia Friends

Bluebird Care Market Harborough and Oadby are saving lives by being Dementia friends - 3 min read

The Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends initiative is aimed at changing people's perceptions of dementia and increasing awareness of how this conditions impacts those living with dementia and their loved ones.

Millions of people across the UK are affected in some way by dementia, but stigma and lack of understanding means that many people with the condition experience social exclusion and loneliness. Dementia mainly affects the elderly in particular people over the age of 65 (one in 14 people in this age group have dementia), and the likelihood of developing dementia increases significantly with age. However, dementia can affect younger people too.

Creating more Dementia Friendly communities and businesses will mean that people affected by dementia will feel included and understood.

What is a Dementia Friend?

A Dementia Friend has sought to learn about what it is like to live with Dementia and has committed to use that new understanding to help imrove the quality of life of those living with this conditon.

Anybody can become a Dementia Friend - it is all about learning more about dementia and the small ways in which you can help. These small steps lead to helping someone with Dementia live safely and happily at home.

How do I become a Dementia Friend?

You can become a Dementia Friend by attending an Information Session run by volunteer Dementia Friends Champions. Each Session lasts approximately one hour and in it you will learn more about dementia and how you can help to create dementia friendly communities. Currently these sessions are not being held face to face due to COVID-19. When we have more information, we will update our website. It is very exciting to become a Dementia Friend and please do also keep a look out on www.dementiafriends.org.uk/ for updates.
