We're proud to have provided support to Beryl since 2020 and recently visited to hear a little more about her incredible life. Here's her story!
Beryl's journey began in Swansea Valley, Wales, where in 1947, she married her husband, who was a soldier. In 1949, Beryl celebrated the arrival of their son, Peter. The family lived in Richmond where Peter grew up, before moving to the property she lives in today.
Beryl’s husband embarked on a career at Rovex, who were a prominent toy manufacturer where he demonstrated his skills as a moulder. His journey continued at Airfix, where he rose to the position of a supervisor of the moulds. However, the turbulence of employment led to redundancy, followed by a six-month break. Despite the challenges, Peter found his way to Timex in River Gardens, showcasing his resilience and adaptability.
Beryl and Peter discovered a key to a happy life: choosing the right partner. They believed that it was the wife's role to make the husband happy. This philosophy became the foundation of their enduring relationship, guiding them through the years with shared laughter, mutual support, and a deep understanding of each other's needs.
Beryl explained that she loves reading and her favourite books are Cathryn Cookson's sagas, with things such as trips to the library becoming a popular pastime.
My advice for a long, happy life is how it’s the job of the wife to make the husband happy!
An opportunity presented itself when Peter's best friend owned a garage in need of staff. Beryl became a petrol pump attendant, a role she fulfilled for most of the 60s until the garage faced financial challenges. Undeterred, she transitioned to an insurance company for civil servants, where she worked as a clerk and eventually ascended to the position of supervisor.
Unfortunately, health challenges arose, with Beryl being bed-bound for three years after a fall. After her fall, Beryl was confined to her chair and bed on the same day and this marked a turning point in her life.
In April 2020, Beryl’s son Peter got in touch to arrange care support and our team now visit a couple of times each day to help with activities of daily living and Beryl explained that her carers are great. They have lots of laughs and it really does make a big difference to her day.
We’re proud to support Beryl and many others like her. It’s a true privilege to be able to make a difference!
