As we come towards the end of our #MakeADifference campaign, we are delighted to share Live In Care Assistant Scholastica's story about why she chose a career in care.

We recently caught up with her and she explained how she transitioned from working in a factory to working in care!

Scholastica explained:
I have worked as a Care Assistant for over 18 years, however before this I worked in a factory in Paddington where I eventually wanted to do something a bit more fulfilling and a career in care seemed very attractive.

I had previously worked in a clinic in Zimbabwe, so I had a fair grip on what working in healthcare involved. It kind of runs in the family I guess as my sister works as a nurse in Germany and my son studies bio medicine.

I started out in the UK working in residential homes as an agency member of staff and then transitioned to working as a permanent member of staff with an organisation named 'Turning Point', where I supported people living with a learning disability in the community.

After this, I worked for the NHS in my local hospital where I met many different challenges that I was able to learn from. I felt that shift work was not for me however as the shifts were 12 hours long so I chose to transition to live in care.

I moved to Scotland and was the Live In Care Assistant to a lovely couple. The husband had experienced a stroke and I supported him for a total of four years.

After this, I chose to join the Bluebird Care team in Hounslow & Chiswick and have been part of the team for just over six months.

I feel it is a real privilege to live in the homes of my customers and find that helping them live at home gives me a really nice feeling. My current customer and I get on really well and he seems to particularly love my cooking!

The team here are good. They support me and are always here to help when I need - I am off on holiday soon, but already looking forward to getting back!
