Stay Hydrated this Summer!

12/07/2022

Our bodies are nearly two-thirds water, so staying hydrated is really important to ensure that you remain healthy.

When our bodies aren’t getting enough fluids you can feel tired, you may get headaches and you won’t be at your best. You get fluids from many sources not just from water from the tap or a bottle. Other drinks such as juice, tea, coffee and milk can give you water, you can also get fluids from the food you eat, on average food provides 20% of your total daily intake. You can get water from nearly all fluids that you drink, except for strong alcoholic drinks such as wine and spirits.

There are a number of factors that can influence the amount of fluid our bodies need. Things such weather conditions, how much physical activity you do and your age can all be factors that influence how much fluid you need.

It is generally accepted that we need 6-8 glasses of water a day, this is on top of the fluids you get from food.

Our bodies have special mechanisms to make sure that we stay hydrated. Feeling thirsty is our bodies way of telling us that we need to drink more. One of the easiest ways to tell if you need to drink more water is the colour of your urine. If it is a dark yellow colour during the day, our urine should be a pale straw colour, so if it is darker than this or you are urinating infrequently or only passing small amounts this is an indication that you should be drinking more.

If the weather is hot or your temperature is high due to illness then you should drink more throughout the day to help keep you hydrated.
