In the second of two recent Dementia Friends sessions for Age UK West Kent befriending, our Community Liaison Manager, Nathan, led a session with a further 10 volunteers recently.

The Dementia Friends Initiative is led by the Alzheimers' Society and provides very valuable information and advice. The sessions with Age UK are particularly helpful because those providing befriending support regularly are paired up with those living with dementia.

The sessions are very practical and everyone gets as much out of them from sharing their experiences as they do from the input Nathan provides.

There is a very powerful analogy that explains how dementia affects a person's brain and this is called 'The Bookcase Analogy' which you can view below:

Wendy, who was previously a community carer in London and joined with her husband said:

I just wanted to say a big “thank you”, for the extremely informative and enjoyable talk, you gave yesterday at Age UK.

Although I had worked with folk with dementia and had a dear friend with the disease, I had never really thought about aspects, other than the memory loss. You have given me lots to think about.

My husband found it most enlightening & is looking forward to putting his new-found knowledge into action.
