I caught up with James to ask him how life has been since induction, how he has found working with Bluebird Care, about his new duties as Field Care Supervisor and what the role entails!

In November 2023, I attended an induction day for new Bluebird Care Assistants. It has been 3 months since our group had completed their training and headed out independently to help the community and those in need. One of those within our group is James, he had originally applied for a Field Care Supervisor role and has hit the ground running within the team at Bluebird Care East Devon. Before joining Bluebird Care, James had previous experience as a Care Supervisor so he had applied for a more senior role.

A Field Care Supervisor is someone who helps safeguard our customers and ensures all the care assessments, care plans and documentation are up to date. He also goes out and visits customers between his office duties. I asked James why he had chosen to go back into care after previously managing a customer support team for a furniture company, and he said:

“I love working with people! Caring for someone is a chance to make a difference in someone's life and help take some of the stress and pressure away.” - James

Compared with his previous experience working with other care providers, James mentioned that there is a sense of belonging in Bluebird Care, and knowing there is always someone to help you. James recalled a time over New Year when one of his customers had passed due to a heart attack and he kept doing first aid and chest compressions until the paramedics arrived. While it is a very sad time, James said he was glad he was trained to deal with that situation and the support from his fellow Bluebirds was amazing.

James’ love of people can be felt throughout his work. When I asked whether there was a particular customer who had a special place in his heart, he couldn’t name just one. He believes that everyone is different and has their own quirks, personalities and good and bad days. I asked James if he had any advice for new Care Assistants and he had this to say:

“Caring is what you put in. If you have a positive attitude and demeanour, people respond better to you.” - James

Now James has bedded into his new role and has become an appreciated and reliable member of staff, I asked what his plans were for the future of his career. Surprisingly, just 3 months into his employment, James was accepted to start his training as an instructor for new care staff within Bluebird Care, he will become accredited in moving and handling and life support training. I think James will make a great instructor and I wish him all the best in his future plans!
