Setting up your care service

The prospect of having a stranger visiting you or living in your home with you can sound unattractive at first.

The prospect of having a stranger visiting you or living in your home with you can sound unattractive at first. However, all care arrangements – whether delivered in or outside your home – involve close personal contact in some way with strangers at first: but our carers are carefully-selected and thoroughly-trained, and they’re not strangers for long.

All of our services can be carefully tailored to fit your needs. If you require Live-in Care, your Personal Assistant can double as a companion; if you live with your partner, or if you require support as a couple, they can be briefed to prioritise your privacy more highly – to be on hand when needed, but to never interfere where their involvement is not required.

Our services may be instated as a permanent arrangement, or on a temporary basis, for instance following discharge from hospital after treatment or surgery. Where customers are initially unsure, we also provide Care on a trial basis: a move to residential care can always be arranged should you find that Care Visits or Live-in Care at Home to not be for you; but an unsuccessful move into residential care can be hard to reverse, especially if you sold your home prior to your move.

If you’re concerned about the costs of Care, there are care financing products which offer an alternative to funding your care purely out of cash, without having to sell your home. You can read more about our independent Care planning.

To set up your Care service we first have to visit you and – if you consent – your family or advocate in your home. This is a relaxed, informal meeting to give you the opportunity to ask all the questions you will undoubtedly have, and for us to find out a little more about you: your personal history, likes, dislikes, needs and preferences, such as:

  • What did you do in your working life?
  • Do you have friends or family nearby, and, if appropriate, how can we involve them periodically?
  • Are you involved with any local clubs, church groups or other organised activities?
  • Do you enjoy Scrabble, Sudoku, Bridge, Bingo or other games and puzzles?
  • What’s your favourite TV programme?
  • What are your favourite foods?
  • Where is your nearest park?

We will also assess your physical needs and abilities, for instance your ability to support your own weight and move around your home, and whether any necessary mobility aids are available or in place. Should our assessment indicate that a visit from an Occupational Therapist is required, we would be available to guide you.

We fully understand that accepting Care Visits or Live-in Care at Home is a big step and marks an important life stage. Our friendly and experienced staff have helped many customers to put in place successful Care arrangements and will guide and support you every step of the way.
