What is Live-in Care?

Live-in Care is a 24-hour service tailored to each individual’s needs. It is suitable for anyone looking for full-time support in their home, helping them maintain an independent lifestyle or delivering a higher level of care than shorter care visits can provide. Live-in Care is the perfect alternative to a residential care home for people who don’t want to leave the familiar surroundings of their own homes.

Live-in Care can be a short-term or a long-term solution for anyone who needs a high level of daily support. We can provide full-time assistance to various customers with mental and physical health challenges.

Who is Live-In Care for?

Live-in Care is suitable for the following:

  • People whose needs outgrow regular domiciliary/homecare visits: As a person’s requirements for home care evolve, it may be that multiple domiciliary care visits per day no longer fulfil their care needs. A Live-in Care Assistant can fit more flexibly around their daily routine whilst becoming a familiar face with whom they can build a strong relationship.
  • People at risk of falls: For older people or those with mobility issues, as well as their families, the risk of falling is a major concern. Unlike scheduled homecare visits, round-the-clock Live-In Care provides the reassurance that should a fall occur, help is quickly on hand.
  • People with Dementia: Live-In Care Assistants are particularly popular with people suffering from Dementia, enabling them to remain in the comfort and familiarity of their own homes when it would otherwise be unsafe or impractical to do so. Having a continuous, uninterrupted care presence can also help to create a calm atmosphere, which minimises some of the confusion and distress that can be a side effect of Dementia.
  • Couples: A 24hr Live-In Care Assistant can provide appropriate levels of care for one or both people in the couple. This can reduce the pressure on the person requiring the least care, enabling them to stay together in their home for as long as possible. For many couples, this is also financially more beneficial than having to fund either a residential care home place for two people or one person, where the family home is still occupied by the other.
  • Adults (18+) : Live-In Care isn’t just for older people; it can also be for any adult who struggles to maintain the independent lifestyle they want without additional support. For those living with physical disabilities or learning difficulties, a Live-In Care Assistant can help with social/companionship activities as well as personal care and medication prompting.

Should I just employ a carer directly?

If you hire someone to carry out care and support for you at home – paid by you personally or with direct payments – you may legally be classed as an employer. This brings with it certain responsibilities, such as, but not limited to:

  • Registering as an employer with HMRC
  • Carrying out employee checks to ensure they have a legal right to work
  • Operating PAYE where applicable to pay their salary
  • Adhering to working time regulations and paid holidays
  • Providing statutory sick pay
  • Taking out employers’ liability insurance

Whilst at first view , this might be more attractive for financial reasons, often when illness or holdiay cover is needed , you will find it difficutlt to source another carer. Also from experience , a personal assistant might be viewed as beneficiary due to more direct personal involvement but this can back fire as well, as it could cover up other problems like neglect , abuse etc . Thsi will only be spotted if you have a team of carers who regularly rotate in and out .

Emotional attachment is good to a certain degree but often decisions needs to be taken with rational and in the best interest of our customer as well as their beloved involved .
