The eclectic mix of men and women who ranged in age from their 20s to their late 50s were inspired in their rigorous training since January by “Teignmouth rowing legend” John Holgate, as John been diagnosed with cancer some four years earlier.

Tragically the week before they set out to row the channel John passed away. This made the team even more determined to complete the challenge and raise funds for this great cause.

The team had to navigate busy shipping lanes and dangerous currents around Alderney, but arrived at the northern most Channel Island in a staggering 12 hours and 15 minutes to a rapturous welcome from the Islanders.

Mark Oswald, crew member and Director of Bluebird Care (Taunton) said:

It was tough training and even tougher having crossed the half way mark in the Channel, but is was a pleasure to hand such a big cheque to the team at Cancer Research UK.”
