Make a difference on International Epilepsy Awareness Day!

A local provider of personalised home and live-in care is encouraging people to mark International Epilepsy Awareness Day next Monday, 14th February.

Epilepsy is a common condition that affects the brain and causes frequent seizures. Seizures are bursts of electrical activity in the brain that temporarily affect how it works. They can cause a wide range of symptoms. Epilepsy can start at any age, but usually starts either in childhood or in people over 60.

There are over 600,000 people in the UK with a known diagnosis of epilepsy

That’s about 1 in 103 people. Every week over 600 people are given an epilepsy diagnosis - that’s 87 people each day! Shockingly, there are 21 epilepsy-related deaths every week in the UK.

Jay Patel, Director of Bluebird Care Merton, commented:

International Epilepsy Day is a special event which promotes awareness of epilepsy in more than 130 countries each year. Every year on the second Monday of February people join together to acknowledge and highlight the problems faced by people with epilepsy, their families and carers.

This is a day for everyone, no matter where you are, no matter how small your group or large your area, no matter whether you focus on the medical or the social aspects of the disease.”

Bluebird Care is encouraging people in the local community to make a difference and to do something to mark the event. Awareness raising ideas can be found at: www.internationalepilepsyday.org
