Deaf Awareness Week 2023

Bluebird Care Epsom & Kingston are supporting Deaf Awareness Week. The annual event aims to raise awareness about the Deaf community, the language, culture, and history.

This year for Deaf Awareness Week we wanted to help promote greater awareness and understand of the challenges faced by the deaf community in accessing communication. As part of Deaf Awareness Week, we spoke to one of our fantastic deaf carers Clare.

Clare joined our team back in 2020, at the time COVID 19 rules and regulations were in place and it was mandatory to wear a mask. Although a challenging time for Clare, this did not stop her and three years later she is still part of our company and a customer favourite!

One customer expressed that Clare was lovely, jolly, and very good at her job. While another expressed her gratitude for the support they receive from Clare.

Although deaf, Clare does not use BSL (British Sign Language) as when she was growing up, she was taught to lipread rather than sign.
