What is multiple sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune condition that disrupts the flow of information between the brain and the body, causing difficulty with movement, balance, and vision.

Despite being primarily known as a physical condition, MS also features cognitive and emotional symptoms, including mood swings, memory impairment, and difficulties processing information.

The symptoms of MS can vary from person to person, in both severity and presentation, meaning not everyone will experience symptoms in the same order, and at the same intensity.

While symptoms can vary, some of the most common symptoms of MS include:

 • Fatigue
 • Numbness or tingling
 • Pain (without clear cause)
 • Bladder and bowel dysfunction
 • Vertigo and dizziness
 • Muscle weakness
 • Depression and emotional changes
 • Cognitive impairments (such as difficulty processing and retaining information)
 • Sexual dysfunction

For more information on the symptoms of MS , please consult the guides provided by the National MS Society, which unpack everything in depth.

What’s included in our multiple sclerosis care services?

We don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to support, so our multiple sclerosis care plans are designed with your loved one’s specific needs in mind, whatever they may be.

Whether it’s help with household chores, support with gentle exercise, or personal care (i.e. bathing and toileting), our support plans are designed to improve your loved one’s physical and emotional well-being.

Our dedicated care professionals are trained to the highest level and can advise on the type and frequency of support that most benefits your loved one, offering suggestions for tweaks and changes as their needs develop.

As the nature of MS varies from person to person, our services are designed with flexibility and personalisation in mind, but typically include:

 • Help with bathing, dressing, and toileting
 • Catheter and continence care
 • Dietary advice and support (including preparing healthy meals)
 • Fetching prescriptions and managing medications
 • Support to stay active with gentle exercise
 • Assistance with household chores, including cleaning and laundry

However your loved one’s support looks, our goal is to offer them dignity and independence, helping them to live the rich, rewarding life they deserve without resorting to potentially costly and impersonal care homes.

But it’s more than just practical tasks. It’s a friendly face when it’s needed most, and sympathetic ear when times are tough.

Our approach to multiple sclerosis care

We believe that people thrive in the comfort and security of home, so our MS care plans are designed to ensure your loved one can stay in the home they love, with the type of personalised support that’ll improve their physical and emotional well-being.

To offer a truly personalised service, we’ll work with you and your loved one to develop a clear understanding of their needs, from which we’ll design a custom support plan which can be revised at any time.

Our mission is to support and uplift your loved one, helping them to live life to the fullest, safe in the knowledge that their needs are taken care of.

To ensure the smoothest possible experience, we’ll even match your loved one with a care professional whose personality we think would be a good fit, allowing them to develop a warm, trusting bond.

FAQ

Everything you need to know about Multiple Sclerosis (ms) care

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease that affects the nervous system, disrupting the flow of information between the brain and body, as well as within the brain itself. It’s a degenerative condition, with symptoms steadily worsening over time.
Despite ongoing research, the exact cause of multiple sclerosis is currently unknown. Researchers have suggested that a combination of genetics and environmental triggers may cause multiple sclerosis, but further study is required.
The symptoms of multiple sclerosis can vary from person to person, and may present in different orders, but common symptoms of the condition include fatigue, tremors, dizziness and balance issues, problems with memory and cognition, and tingling or numbness of the skin. Less common symptoms include random emotional outbursts (of tears or laughter), burning or stabbing sensations in the cheeks and jaw, and difficulty swallowing.
No. Despite many online rumours to the contrary, multiple sclerosis isn’t a hereditary (i.e. inherited from a parent) condition. In fact, statistics from the Multiple Sclerosis Society indicate that the likelihood of multiple cases of MS in a family is quite low.
Due to the diverse nature of the condition, there’s currently no single test to diagnose multiple sclerosis. If your loved one’s GP thinks they may have MS, they’ll refer them to a neurologist for a series of tests that may include blood tests, MRI scans, lumbar punctures, and general assessments of movement, coordination, and balance.
At Bluebird Care, we offer dedicated multiple sclerosis care, tailored to your loved one’s unique needs. This care will vary from person to person, but typically includes support with personal care, toileting and bathing, dietary support, and help with household chores.
Multiple sclerosis care is designed to offer your loved one dignity and independence, allowing them to stay in the comfort of home, supported by a dedicated professional who’ll provide tailored assistance, based on their unique needs and preferences. Our care professionals will work with your loved one to devise an MS care package that covers their needs, whatever they may be. This may be in the form of regularly scheduled visits or more focused round-the-clock care.
Whether it’s emotional support on difficult days or practical support such as help with household errands, MS care boasts a variety of benefits designed to offer your loved one dignity and independence, improving their overall quality of life with focused support, tailored to their unique needs. Aside from the practical and emotional benefits, tailored MS care also improves your loved one’s safety by helping to prevent accidents and monitor changes in their condition.
