PART 2 - In this part of the career guide, you will get an insight into a real-life example of a care assistant at Bluebird Care (Havering).

In the first part of our ‘Career in Care’ guide, we covered what to expect working as a care assistant. In the second part of this guide, you will get an insight into a real-life example of a care assistant at Bluebird Care (Havering).

We conducted an employee questionnaire to find out information on what it is truly like to work as a care assistant. We spoke to Maddie, a lovely care assistant from the Bluebird Care (Havering) facility. The findings were very positive overall.

Bluebird Care (Havering): What made you want to work in the care industry?

Maddie: “I have always seen myself as a caring person. I used to care for my Gran for a period of time, so gained some personal experience from this. It also made me decide that I wanted to take a career path within care.”

Bluebird Care (Havering): What made you decide to apply for a role with Bluebird Care?

Maddie: “I found Bluebird Care whilst doing a job search on Indeed. After looking at the job description, I then took it upon myself to do some Google research on Bluebird Care to find out some more information about the company. I personally liked what they stood for, and liked what I saw overall.”

Bluebird Care (Havering): Did you have any prior experience in the industry? What training have you received?

Maddie: “I had no professional experience before I started employment with Bluebird Care. The only experience I had was caring for my Gran for a short period of time.

During my employment I received all necessary Induction Training which included moving and handling customers in a safe and professional way. As well as personal care, medication, safeguarding, infection control and most importantly, health and safety training.”

Bluebird Care (Havering): What is the day-to-day life like as a care assistant at Bluebird Care?

Maddie: “It really does vary day to day. Some days are relaxed and some days are sometimes stressful. I would usually go into the customer’s house, following the Care Plan which is set for that day and complete the tasks within that plan.

One thing that I always make sure that I do is have a nice long chat with the customers as a lot of them live on their own and it can get extremely lonely for them.”

Bluebird Care (Havering): What is one thing you love about your job?

Maddie: “One thing that I really love about my job is the customers. I love chatting to them all on a daily basis and hearing stories from their past. I just love my job overall!”

Bluebird Care (Havering): What has been your favourite moment in care so far?

Maddie: “The best moment for me was when I first started at Bluebird Care and met the customers for the first time. It was great to get to know them over time and to care for them.”

Bluebird Care (Havering): What advice would you give to someone who is looking for a career in care?

Maddie: “My advice would be that you have to be patient. You need to know the customer and understand them in order to care for their needs and give them the right support.

As well as this, don’t stress too much as things always work out in the end. And remember, if you are ever unsure about something, don’t be afraid to ask someone for advice.”
