Customer Marjorie has an extremely interesting claim to fame and we're excited to tell you about it.

Working in care is extremely rewarding as you not only get to make a difference to the lives of those you are supporting, but also hear about their fascinating life story whilst learning from their life experience.

We recently spent some time with customer Margorie from Hastings to hear about her background and experience with Bluebird Care. Born in her mother’s house in Hastings, Marjorie has seen a lot of changes to the area over the past 93 years.

When she was 14, Marjorie left school to complete an apprenticeship in dressmaking where she worked until the age of 16 and then applied to her local day hospital where she trained as a nursery nurse.

With the experience of being a nursery nurse, Marjorie then proceeded to train as a State Registered Nurse, where she moved away from home to London for three years to complete her studies.

Marjorie met her husband Alan in Hastings and was married for just under 50 years. She has a son and two daughters.

After her children grew up, Marjorie went back to nursing, where she worked for 25 years at St Helens Hospital in Hastings, ending up as a nursing officer when she retired.

Marjorie gained something of a claim to fame whilst working at St Helens Hospital as she was involved in planning the Conquest Hospital in Saint Leonards-on-sea, providing opinion as part of the original steering group!

Marjorie has lived in the same house for the past 66 years and remaining there for as long as possible is extremely important for her. She arranged for care support following a hospital procedure, where she was unable to stand and required help with getting up, breakfast, lunch and dinner in the evening.

I feel safe and comfortable living at home and being able to do so with a little support is much better than needing to move. Staying at home makes a big difference to my mental wellbeing!

Marjorie has received support from Bluebird Care for around two and a half years and explained that her support circle is extremely good; this ranges from family to friends and the care assistants who visit. She has even befriended this seagull, who visits every day for its food!

We asked Marjorie what tips she would give for living a long, fulfilled life and her advice is to work hard, exercise and have a good diet. It’s certainly worked for her!
