Every carer across our North Tyneside team completes specialised dementia training, one of the most thorough programmes available in home care today. It goes well beyond a standard induction session, and families notice the value it adds quite quickly.
The training itself is immersive and in depth. Rather than simply reading about dementia, our carers go through simulated exercises that recreate the confusion, frustration and sensory disruption it can involve, from blurred vision and muffled hearing to the physical difficulty of everyday tasks like getting dressed. Learning this firsthand, not just from a manual, is what gives our team a genuine understanding to draw on. It is delivered in house by Michelle Dodds, our dementia interpreter lead who holds a level 4 qualification, alongside Amie Lockey, who holds a level 3 qualification, so it comes from real experience within our own team rather than an outside trainer with no connection to our customers.
The value shows in the quality of everyday visits. Carers respond with more patience and confidence, picking up on small changes early and adjusting their approach before a situation becomes difficult. Personal care, meals and daily routines tend to go more smoothly, and visits carry a calmer, more settled feel overall.
For families, this translates into real reassurance. It is not just knowing that the tasks on a care plan get done, but trusting that your relative is genuinely understood and well supported by the person looking after them, visit after visit.
This is the standard we hold ourselves to in North Tyneside: training that goes further, delivered by our own team, with a difference families can see.
