Our real career journeys series shares the experiences of Bluebird Care colleagues from across the UK, bringing to life the findings from our latest Care Index report published in July 2026, "Untapped Opportunities: Building Meaningful Careers in Social Care".
Through these stories, we're exploring the different career paths, opportunities and experiences that exist across social care.
This week, we meet Kerry Brooker, whose journey from Care Assistant to Registered Care Manager shows how a first role in care can grow into a rewarding long-term career.

Did you always see social care as your future career?
I originally joined Bluebird Care as a Care Assistant after having my son because I wanted to return to work. At that stage, I saw it as a job rather than a career. After spending time working in a nursing home, my former supervisor encouraged me to return to Bluebird Care, and that's when I really began to see the opportunities available to develop and progress.
How has training supported your career?
I've completed all of my qualifications while working at Bluebird Care, and the practical training I received gave me the confidence to take on new responsibilities. I believe face-to-face training is essential because caring is a hands-on profession. It shouldn't just be about completing online modules – people need the opportunity to practise skills, ask questions and build confidence before supporting others.
What has kept you working in social care?
Over the last ten years, I've had the opportunity to work in a variety of roles, which has kept me motivated and constantly learning. Some of the most meaningful moments have come from supporting families during incredibly difficult times, including helping one family organise a loved one's funeral. Experiences like that remind me why I chose this profession. I also think we need to do much more to promote the progression opportunities available in social care so more people can see it as the career it truly is.
