When Heather Porter trained as a nursery nurse, she expected her future career would involve working with children. She never imagined that supporting older people would lead her to discover a completely different passion — or take her from Care Assistant to Registered Managing Director.
Today, Heather oversees Bluebird Care services across the East of England. Her journey shows what can happen when someone is given the opportunity to learn, develop and discover strengths they did not know they had.
Discovering a passion for adult social care
Heather’s original career plans were focused on working with children. However, after she began supporting older people, her direction changed.
Thinking about her own grandparents helped Heather understand the importance of compassionate, reliable care and the difference it can make to an entire family. She quickly discovered how much she enjoyed helping people remain safe, independent and comfortable in their own homes.
What had started as an unexpected change of direction soon became work she genuinely cared about.
Learning through experience
Heather began her career in adult social care as a Care Assistant, supporting customers in their own homes and learning what high-quality, person-centred care looks like in practice.
The experience gave her a strong understanding of the day-to-day realities of care. She learned from experienced colleagues, developed her skills through professional qualifications and built her knowledge by taking on new challenges.
Heather did not begin with a long-term plan to reach a senior leadership position. Her progression happened step by step, supported by the people around her and her willingness to keep learning.
Progressing into leadership
As Heather’s experience and confidence grew, so did her responsibilities.
She progressed from Care Assistant to Team Leader, before becoming a Care Supervisor and then Deputy Manager. Each new role gave her a broader understanding of how a care service operates and how strong leadership can support both customers and colleagues.
Heather later became a Registered Manager, taking responsibility for the quality and delivery of care while supporting her team to provide the highest possible standards.
Her career continued to develop as she progressed to Care Director and, ultimately, Registered Managing Director.
From delivering care to leading a business
As Registered Managing Director, Heather now oversees the wider business and helps shape how care is delivered across Bluebird Care in the East of England.
Although her responsibilities have changed significantly since her first role as a Care Assistant, the purpose behind her work remains the same: helping customers stay safe, independent and at home for as long as possible.
Her frontline experience continues to influence the way she leads. Having worked at every level of a care service, Heather understands the challenges teams can face and the support they need to succeed.
She is also passionate about helping colleagues recognise their own potential, develop their skills and take the next step in their careers.
