Stress is something that affects us all at some point in our lives. Whether it's coping with financial, work-related, or relationship issues, stress can be a natural response to life's ups and downs.

What is Stress

Stress is our body's response to life issues or pressure. When we encounter these, our bodies release adrenaline, often referred to as the "fight or flight" hormone. Adrenaline can sometimes be beneficial, motivating us to take action and deal with the situation. However, when stress becomes unmanageable, it can have different effects on our mood, physical health, and relationships, leading to anxiety, irritability, and low self-esteem. In extreme cases, prolonged stress can result in burnout, leaving us physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausted.

Recognising Stress

We can feel stress in various ways. Emotional signs of stress may include-

  • Irritability, anger, or tearfulness

  • Worries, anxiety, hopelessness, or fear

  • Difficulty making decisions, overthinking, or feeling overwhelmed

Physical signs-

  • Stomach issues, stress headaches, and muscle pain

  • Skin reactions like rashes and hives

  • Dizziness or nausea

In some cases, stress may even lead to high blood pressure and chest pains. If you experience concerning symptoms or believe your stress levels are severe, it is essential to speak to your GP.

 

Causes of Stress

The triggers for stress vary from person to person, with everyone having their own tolerance levels. Common triggers may include-

  • Work-related issues

  • Family and relationship issues

  • Life-changing events like relocation, childbirth, or loss

  • Financial concerns

  • Health issues

  • Pregnancy and parenting 

  • Feelings of loneliness
