Everybody’s experience of living with Parkinson’s is different, some people may find it easier to manage than others. However, there are lots of issues that are shared by many people living with the disease.

 

Parkinson’s Disease is a condition in which parts of the brain become progressively damaged over many years. There is currently no cure for the disease, however there are lots of treatments to help manage the symptoms. 

The main symptoms include- 

  • Involuntary shaking of particular parts of the body (tremor)

  • Slow movement

  • Stiff and inflexible muscles

 

When living with Parkinson's Disease, it’s very important that a Care Plan is agreed with yourself and your health care team (sometimes your friends and family too!) There are different types of treatments for the disease depending on the severity, the treatments include- 

  • Supportive therapies, such as physiotherapy

  • Medication

  • Surgery (for some people)

 

As well as ensuring you are following the treatments outlined in the care plan, it’s also just as important to ensure you are leading a healthy lifestyle by eating and exercising well, keeping up to date with all vaccinations (especially the annual flu jab), and having someone to support you if and when needed.
