Distance is the big one
In a town, a carer might drive five minutes between visits. Out towards Porlock, Dunster, Watchet or the Exmoor villages, it can be much longer. That matters because a care company that books visits too tightly ends up with carers running late, rushing, or not turning up at all.
When Rose, our care coordinator, plans rotas, she groups visits by area so carers aren't criss-crossing the county. It means your carer arrives when they said they would and has the time to actually stay for the visit.
Familiar faces matter even more
In a small community, people know each other. Where we can, we use carers who live locally, so they know the roads, the shops, and sometimes the families. We try hard to send the same small group of carers to each person, so nobody has to explain their routine to a stranger every week.
Weather and the road network
Winter storms, flooding on low roads and the odd closure on the A39 are part of life here. We plan ahead for bad weather by checking who lives where, who has family nearby, and who would be most at risk if a visit was delayed. Those people come first.
Living alone, a long way from family
A lot of people retire to the West Somerset coast, which is lovely until their children live in Bristol, London or further. If that's your situation, a few things make a real difference:
- Regular updates. Ask us how you'd like to hear about visits, and we'll keep you in the loop.
- Health checks during visits. Our Health & Wellbeing Checks use NHS-recognised tools to spot changes in things like blood pressure, oxygen levels and breathing. If something looks off, we can contact the local health team and let you know.
- Companionship, not just tasks. Help with shopping, a trip to the seafront or a game of cards can do as much good as help with washing and dressing.
The care we offer around Minehead
Across West Somerset we provide home care visits, companionship, night care, respite, dementia support and live-in care. Live-in care can work especially well in rural homes, where daily visits can be harder to arrange. One carer lives with the person and is there all day.
If you're in Minehead or one of the surrounding villages and wondering what help is available, call us on 01278 488799. We'll talk honestly about what we can and can't do where you live.
