There is an incorrect assumption that only the elderly can benefit from complex care services – the reality is that it’s for anyone living with a long-term, progressive condition or injury.
Many people living with life-altering conditions can achieve a great quality of life and perform all those everyday tasks that we take for granted, thanks to complex care providers.
In this blog, we’ve taken a closer look at some of the reasons why a person may need complex care and what it could look like for them.
The passionate team at Bluebird Care Bournemouth and Poole provides complex care and support when and where you need it. If you or a loved one require complex care services, get in touch with us today to begin creating a care plan tailored to your individual needs.
Who might need complex care?
People may require complex care services for a variety of reasons, from a lifelong condition that they were born with, to an injury that occurred later in life. Some of the conditions that we provide specialist care for include:
- Acquired brain injuries
- Arthritis
- Dementia and Alzheimer’s
- Diabetes
- Huntington’s Disease
- Hypertension
- Joint replacement
- Learning and developmental disabilities (such as autism and Down Syndrome)
Mental health disorders (such as anorexia, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia) - Motor Neuron Disease (MND)
- Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
- Parkinson’s Disease
- Physical disabilities
- Spinal injuries
- Stroke
We can also provide complex palliative and end-of-life care, with staff providing both emotional and practical support to you and your loved ones from diagnosis until those final months.
Types of complex care
Complex care aims to enable you to continue living life as independently as possible in the comfort of your own home. The type of care offered will depend on your situation, but can adapt to your changing needs.
- 24-hour care
This option provides around-the-clock care, delivered by a small, dedicated team of Care Experts who work in shifts to ensure your loved one is never alone - day or night - and that they receive the care, support, companionship and expertise 24-hours a day. - Live-in care
This option means that one of our Care Experts lives at home with your loved one, allowing them to live their life on their terms with peace of mind that assistance is not far away. - Visiting care
This option provides care on an hourly basis, allowing you the flexibility to choose when and how you need support. It is ideal for those who live with loved ones who cannot be there all the time. - Overnight care
This option provides care overnight – either sleeping night (a Care Expert will be asleep but present if help is needed) or waking night (a Care Expert will be present and awake all night). - Respite care
This option provides care on a short-term basis, enabling the normal carer (usually a loved one) to have a much-needed break. This can occur on a live-in, visiting, or overnight basis.
What does complex care involve?
Complex care plans are tailored to the needs of each individual, which means that the tasks involved are varied and flexible. Some of the services that our Care Experts can provide include:
- Assistance with re-learning essential life skills (such as walking and talking)
- Personal care (such as bathing and toileting)
- Medication management
- Nutritional support (by preparing tasty, healthy meals)
- Household assistance with daily chores (such as laundry and cleaning)
- Supporting an active lifestyle
- Companionship
- Managing catheters, stomas, PEGs and other medical devices
- Continence care
- Assistance with running errands and attending appointments
- Supporting social activities and community involvement
- Coordinating with other healthcare providers
When creating a care plan, we liaise closely with the client, their loved ones, and any healthcare providers, as well as perform our own thorough assessments to ensure that the right level of support is provided.
Why your choice of home care provider matters
Having a loved one who needs some extra support and deciding how to provide this to them is a big decision. There are lots of different factors that you’ll need to consider, and ensuring that you’ve chosen the best possible care provider will be at the top of that list.
While there are many providers out there, they are not all created equal, and some can provide a better level of care than others.
Some of the factors that should be considered when choosing a care provider include personalised care plans, regular reviews to ensure that the correct support is being provided, comprehensive training for the Care Experts to meet your loved one’s specific needs, having cover if your regular carer is away or sick, and being a regulated company.
