We sent one of our care assistants, Vanessa Lacy, on an end of life training course at St John’s Hospice on Wednesday 27th April and Friday 13th May 2016. Read below what Vanessa thought about the whole experience.

Firstly I would just like to thank Bluebird Care Bedford for sending me on this course, I am so grateful for this opportunity to learn more about something I am so passionate about.

The course was amazing, and was delivered in a sensitive way. They provided a space for us to share our own personal experiences, I lost my mum when I was 14 and my Nan a few years ago. It made me realise that communication is so important and just simply asking ‘how are you feeling’ can make such a difference. They also taught us about the choices that people have and how to help someone die with dignity. I feel very proud that I have completed this course.

The trainers at St. John’s Hospice gave us both practical and emotional techniques to help our customers and to help ourselves, something simple can really make a huge difference.

I feel a lot more confident after completing this course and it has made me reflect on my work and think about ways to improve my work, I have already started using some of the things I was taught in my visits with customers.

I have always been passionate about end of life care and this has strengthened that passion and has inspired me to learn more and I hope to volunteer at the centre in my spare time. “
