Dementia Action Week 2024

May 2024

Bluebird Care Lewisham & Southwark supports Dementia Action Week 2024

Bluebird Care Lewisham & Southwark is supporting Dementia Action Week 2024, an annual, weeklong, campaign run by the Alzheimer’s Society from 13th – 19th May.

There are around 850,000 people in the UK with dementia, with over 40,000 under the age of 65. In a very small number of people certain types of dementia can be inherited, with scientists investigating how dementia can run in the family.

The Alzheimer’s Society is the UK’s leading charity for dementia, providing information and support to individuals as well as funding vital research with the hope to create lasting change for everyone affected by dementia.

This year’s theme for Dementia Action Week is Diagnosis. If you or a loved one is experiencing memory loss, it could be a sign of dementia. Research shows that the misconception around memory loss being a sign of normal ageing is the biggest barrier to people seeking a dementia diagnosis.

Kate Mortimer, Registered Care Manager at Bluebird Care Lewisham & Southwark, said:

“With diagnosis rates falling to a five-year low, the Alzheimer’s Society wants to encourage those who might be living with undiagnosed dementia to go to them for guidance and support and feel empowered to take the next step.

Getting a diagnosis can be daunting, but we believe it’s better to know. And so do 91% of people affected by dementia.

Bluebird Care Lewisham & Southwark is pleased to be supporting Dementia Action Week 2024!”
