Fighting Hereditary Cancer: A Personal Journey of Awareness

In the face of adversity, one family's journey shines a light on the importance of raising awareness about hereditary conditions and the relentless battle against cancer. A devoted grandmother, Kate our Field Supervisor at Bluebird Care Exeter, talks about the fight against familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP).

FAP, a hereditary condition predisposing individuals to colorectal cancer, took a devastating toll on the life of her daughter-in-law, Lynda. Lynda's courageous battle against secondary bowel cancer, along with liver and lung cancer, epitomises the relentless struggle against this formidable disease.

In 2021, spurred by a desire to make a difference, Kate decided to take action. With unwavering determination, she bravely shaved her head to raise funds for St. Marks Hospital in London, a renowned institution dedicated to researching FAP. Through her selfless act, she managed to garner nearly £1400 in support of this crucial cause. Despite the gravity of her situation, Lynda found humour in her mother-in-law's fundraising efforts.

Throughout her ordeal, Lynda endured the brunt of her battle with bowel cancer. Kate reflects on the profound impact of this form of cancer, recognising the immense suffering it entails. Despite the heartache of Lynda's passing in April 2021, her legacy of resilience and advocacy lives on.

Aware of the hereditary nature of her condition, Kate’s thoughts turned to her beloved grandson, Logan. Understanding the importance of early detection and intervention, plans have been made for Logan to undergo genetic testing around the age of 12. This proactive approach aims to identify whether he carries the genetic predisposition to FAP, allowing for timely monitoring and intervention if necessary.

As Kate reminisces about Lynda's journey, she takes solace in the knowledge that their efforts to raise awareness about FAP and bowel cancer persist. In a poignant reminder of their shared bond, a cherished photograph captures Lynda with her son, Logan, during her treatment.

In the face of loss and sorrow, this family's story serves as a testament to the power of love, resilience, and unwavering determination. Through their collective efforts, they continue to champion the cause of raising awareness in the ongoing fight against hereditary cancer.
