Coping with dementia

Dementias of all types can be difficult to come to terms with. Loved ones may change their behaviour or personality and those living with dementia may feel confused, anxious and angry.

It's important to remember that for everyone living with dementia, their journey is their own. Unique to them and different for everybody. Symptoms do not follow a clear path, progression may be rapid, slow, fits & starts or may not even progress much at all depending on the cause & type of dementia.

We'd urge everyone living with dementia - and their families - to make use of the support services available. From care agencies such as ourselves, day centres and Community Mental Health professionals, there's help available.

We know that the everyday things can often be the most frustrating for families living with dementia so here's our top tips to help.

Getting lost
  • Sew name, address & contact details as a label into coats & jackets.
  • Save carers or family details under ICE on mobile phone
  • Carry a laminated contact card in wallet or purse
  • Consider a personal GPS tracker - but only with the agreement of the person being tracked!
Household Reminders

Make up some laminated posters or notices to address any dangerous behaviour. E.g, put a reminder next to the gas hob as a reminder to turn off the gas or if someone is prone to wandering, a notice on the door reminding them not to go out can work really well.

Also put notices where they can be seen in case of emergency - from the stairlift for example.

"Mum - If you fall, press the RED button on your alarm bracelet"

Thanks for the memories

Make up a memory box filled with items from the past, old tickets, postcards, school photos etc.

Delve into & discuss, you never know what gems come from chats like that!

What day is it?

Electronic calendars can be used to help orientate to day/time or date.

Make use of noticeboards & visible calendars to note appointments & important dates.

Where did I put that?

If losing items such as keys, handbags etc is becoming a distressing problem then consider a locator tag, there's lots on the market and they help to locate mislaid items in conjunction with a phone app.

Ensure name & phone number labels are on anything that could be mislaid when out & about. Thankfully the majority of people are honest & will try & return lost property.
