First newsletter for Bluebird Care Westminster

Published: 29/06/2016

Welcome to our first newsletter. We are a forward-thinking, highly-professional care at home provider and embrace the active part that we play in our local communities in the City of Westminster and the City of London.

So far, 2016 has been eventful, kicking off with a positive Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection (read more below), and strengthening our team by recruiting additional office staff to help support and coordinate the important work carried out by our team of 55 care workers.

As well as developments within the organisation, we also carry out voluntary work with community initiatives such as “Hymns and Pimms” at Grosvenor Chapel, and are currently planning free training for local unpaid carers (see below). Get in touch if you have any similar initiatives that you may want to discuss.

CQC rates our care “Outstanding”

We were immensely proud to have achieved an “Outstanding” rating for our care – for championing services for local people living with dementia.

Bluebird Care is the only Westminster-based homecare organisation to have achieved the highest rating from the independent regulator for ‘Is the Service Caring?’ All other areas of the inspection were ‘Good’ – giving us an overall ‘Good’ rating.

The CQC report said we “had a lead role in championing and supporting people living with dementia, which also impacted on quality of life for people living with dementia who used the service and in the wider local community”.

Since establishing the business in 2012, we have always ensured staff are specially trained in dementia awareness, including recognising the benefits of music, singing, activities and therapeutic touch.

We deliver home and community care to adults with a wide variety of needs, not just those with dementia. Delivering truly personalised care and support for our customers and their families and creating community health care links has always been a central ethos of Bluebird Care – something we believe is crucial to maintaining happiness and independence. This is something we are looking to develop further in 2016-17.

It’s about teamwork!

We’re a closely-knit organisation – with the office team supporting our highly trained, professional team of care workers, who are experts in many aspects of care including end-of-life, dementia and Parkinson’s. We also provide care visits and live-in care.

Earlier this year we promoted two of our highly-experienced care workers, Valeria Priore and Sultana Begum to supervisory positions. This has increased our office support team to six – plus Peter Slough.

Eat cake for ‘Bluebird Care Bakeoff’

To help raise funds for the ‘Hymns and Pimms’ group, for those living with dementia and their carers, we will be holding ‘The Great Bluebird Care Bakeoff’ event on July 20 at 2.00pm at Grosvenor Chapel, Mayfair.

Our team of carers will be pitting their culinary skills against each other and vying for top place in our bake-off contest. Our three judges and the audience will help judge the cakes. Lady Christabel Flight, the recent Lord Mayor of Westminster will be one of the judges. Our care workers will help at the event, so carers can enjoy a well-earned break.

Refreshments and plenty of cakes available! Please call 0207 976 6163 or email westminster@bluebirdcare.co.uk to book a space.

Successful fundraising for InDeep at SouthWest Fest!

InDeep is a local registered charity that mainly works with older people in Westminster offering friendship by way of a range of activities and services to people living in the area, as many have no family, or family that live far away, and are on low incomes.

We are very proud to partner and support InDeep as our charity of the year 2016 and we will continue to raise money for them throughout the year.

We had a very successful day at Southwest Fest in St Georges Square on the 18 June. Thank you for everyone who visited our stand and helped us raise money for our charity of the year - InDeep. We raised over £200 on the day and everyone had a lot of fun.

Supporting local carers

The UK recently celebrated national Carers Week – with a focus on building Carer Friendly Communities – an initiative we at Bluebird Care believe we should all support.

Helping carers and the people they care for to be a part of the community is something we believe is crucial to maintaining happiness and independence. And to support our local, unpaid carers, we’re planning a free training session later this year.

Bluebird Care director Peter Slough said: “Professional, fully-trained care assistants can enable people to live fulfilling lives in their own homes, with plenty of social contact - helping them to avoid becoming isolated or lonely. And there are more than 5 million unpaid carers in the UK, who look after family and friends and make an enormous contribution to our communities. We should all do what we can to support carers – running a drop-in, support group or simply helping a neighbour or friend can make all the difference.”
