As part of our efforts to raise awareness during Alzheimer’s Month, Bluebird Care Taunton & Mid-Devon recently sat down with one of our customers, Colin, to talk honestly about what life can look like when someone you love is living with Alzheimer’s.

Colin's story is one of love, patience and commitment, but it also highlights the very real challenges faced by the families and unpaid carers supporting someone with dementia.

A New Home and a New Chapter

Earlier this year, Colin and his wife moved into a cabin built on their son's land.

The home has given them the opportunity to remain together while being close to family, but Colin explained that caring for his wife full-time comes with challenges that many people may not fully understand.

For Colin, every day begins with problem-solving.

One of the first things he often has to do in the morning is search around the house for items his wife has moved or hidden. Things he needs throughout the day can suddenly disappear, leaving him trying to work out where they might have been put.

It is one of many ways Alzheimer’s has changed their everyday life.

The Difficult Reality of Memory Loss

Colin explained that his wife's short-term memory has deteriorated significantly.

Alzheimer’s can affect every person differently, and for families, adapting to those changes can be incredibly difficult. The person you know and love is still there, but the condition can change the way they remember, communicate and respond to the world around them.

Colin also spoke honestly about changes in his wife's behaviour.

He explained that she can sometimes become hostile or aggressive when Alzheimer’s is mentioned, which is completely unlike the person she was before.

For a husband who has known and loved his wife for so long, witnessing those changes can be deeply difficult.

Caring for Someone You Love

Many family members naturally want to do everything they can to care for a loved one themselves.

But being a full-time carer can be physically and emotionally demanding.

There is often very little time to rest, switch off or focus on your own wellbeing.

Colin's story is an important reminder that carers need care too.

Supporting someone with Alzheimer’s can be a full-time responsibility, and even the most dedicated husband, wife, son, daughter or family member sometimes needs time to breathe.

The Importance of Respite and Support

For Colin, the support from Bluebird Care gives him something incredibly valuable: time to rest.

Once or twice a week, a Bluebird Care professional visits and takes his wife out for lunch.

For his wife, it is an opportunity to get out, enjoy some companionship and spend time doing something different.

For Colin, it provides a much-needed break from his responsibilities as a full-time carer.

That time may only be a few hours, but when you are caring for someone every day, those hours can make an enormous difference.

It gives Colin the opportunity to rest, recharge and take some time for himself, knowing his wife is being supported.

Care Is About Supporting the Whole Family

At Bluebird Care Taunton & Mid-Devon, we understand that care does not only affect the person receiving support.

It affects the entire family.

Professional care can help families continue spending meaningful time together without one person having to carry every responsibility alone.

Whether that means providing regular home care, companionship, supporting someone to get out into the community or giving a family carer some much-needed respite, the right support can make a genuine difference to everyone's wellbeing.

Colin's Call for Greater Awareness

During our conversation, Colin also shared his belief that Alzheimer’s and dementia need greater public attention.

He feels the condition should receive the same level of awareness and focus as other major illnesses, including cancer.

His message is an important one.

Alzheimer’s does not only affect the person diagnosed with the condition. It affects husbands and wives, children, grandchildren, friends and entire families.

Behind every diagnosis is a network of people adapting to a new reality and often taking on responsibilities they may never have expected.

Thank You, Colin

We would like to thank Colin for being so open and honest about his family's experience.

Sharing personal stories can be difficult, but conversations like this are incredibly important.

They help us better understand the realities of living with Alzheimer’s, challenge misconceptions and remind families that they do not have to face the challenges of caring alone.

For Colin, having someone come in once or twice a week may seem like a small thing.

But sometimes, a few hours of support, a chance to rest and the reassurance that someone else understands can make all the difference.

At Bluebird Care Taunton & Mid-Devon, we are proud to support customers and families through life's challenges with professional care, genuine companionship and understanding.

Because caring for someone you love should never mean you have to do it all alone.
