Stories that matter in our community

Real moments, real people at Bluebird Care Stratford & Warwick

John and Evelyn have shared a wonderful life together for 34 years, building a family full of love and laughter along the way. Here is their remarkable Lifetime Love Story.

A party hello that lasted a lifetime

They first met at a party. Not long after, John plucked up the courage to ring Ev. He reached the answerphone. Undeterred, he left a message. Ev rang him back and, as they say, the rest is history.

Today, their family has grown to 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, a legacy of love, laughter, and many years shared together.

After all the time I’d been on my own, that lady just lit me up.

What home means
When asked what "home" means to them, their answer is simple:
"The best place to be." - John & Ev

Their home is full of space, beautiful gardens, and decades of memories. It is familiar, comforting, and theirs.
If they were not able to live there, they say they would miss the space, the gardens, and the familiarity of a place they have known for many years.
For John and Ev, staying at home was not just a preference. It was deeply important to them both.

Facing the idea of care
Like many couples, the idea of having care at home initially felt daunting. They admit they felt slightly fearful at first, influenced by poor reports they had seen in the press. It felt like a big step and they were not sure what to expect.Choosing live-in care with Bluebird Care Stratford & Warwick has eased their situation enormously.John & Evelyn

A match that made a difference
A huge part of their positive experience has been being carefully matched with their live-in carer, Routh. Her support has gone far beyond practical care. She has helped Ev reconnect with something that brings her real joy. Ev used to play the piano, but over time it became harder for her to keep track of the tune.

With Routh’s encouragement and patience, Ev has started playing again. Routh gently sings along, slowly and clearly, helping Ev follow the melody as she plays. It is a small moment that has made a big difference, bringing music back into their home and confidence back to Ev.

It feels like music has come back into our home and our hearts

Peace of mind
Now, things feel different. John says the biggest change is the reassurance:
"It’s taken a load off me." - John

With live-in care in place, he knows Ev is being well looked after. There is comfort in having the backing of a company they feel they can rely on, knowing support is always there.

For Ev, the benefit is just as powerful:
"It frees your mind up for other things." -  Ev

And for John?
"Peace of mind." - John

Their advice to others

If they were speaking to another couple feeling unsure about accepting care, their message would be simple:
"Don’t be too afraid. If you decide you want care, get care!" - John & Ev

Their experience has shown them that the right care, with the right match, can bring relief, support, and even moments of happiness you might not expect.

John and Ev’s story is a reminder that accepting support does not mean giving up independence. It can mean protecting what matters most, staying together, staying at home, and continuing life with confidence, comfort, and even music filling the rooms once again.
