South Marine Park

South Marine Park is an iconic part of South Tyneside that will always remain popular for its Victorian style mini train and local art trail. Not only does it cater to the likes of children for its parks, split into younger ages and older children but it caters for the older generation who want to take a walk around the lake and have a coffee or ice cream at Minchella’s.

Offering a wide range of activities for all ages, South Marine Park is a wonderful idea for a day out. Spend the morning getting a coffee at Minchellas, take a walk around the park and maybe rent a boat on the lake to take in the views (Recommended in the summer), walk and take a look at the bandstand, then look at the view of the park from the top.

The park includes:
  • Art trail
  • Boating lake
  • Cafe
  • Friends of the park group
  • Miniature steam railway
  • Open space
  • Picnic tables
  • Event spaces

South Marine Park has been a part of South Tyneside for over 100 years, reaching the hearts of adults taking their children here, who were once children playing there themselves.

“For over 100 years it has been a place for walking, dancing, relaxing, playing and socialising.

South Marine Park is registered under the Historic Buildings and Ancient Monuments Act 1953 within the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens by English Heritage for its special historic interest.

It is part of a chain of 3 seaside parks (including North Marine and Bents Park) developed from the 1870s and into the early 20th Century on reclaimed land.” As seen on the South Tyneside Government website.

North Marine Park

North Marine Park is in walking distance of South Marine Park, featuring a developed themed park, an amazing view of South Shields Seafront and an adult fitness trail. This park is filled with nature, that is beautiful any season – with visits from animals such as squirrels, rabbits, and all kinds of rare birds!

The themed children’s play area is the highlight of the park for most families, many years ago it started as a pirate ship, which later go developed into a full play area which goes by a Shipwreck/Pirate theme, its fair to say, this park has undergone a transformation that has attracted many more visitors daily.

Not only is the park accessible for anyone, with ramps and many walking routes, but the view from the top is amazing. With a view of the seafront, nearby you have access to Haven Point Minchellas, Haven Point Leisure Gym and Leisure Centre, The Little Haven Hotel and many restaurants located on the sea front. You’re guaranteed a long and entertained day out when you visit the park.
