Companionship and support

One of the most important and valued aspects of a live-in carer’s role is the provision of companionship and support. For many people with live-in carers, simply having someone friendly on hand to chat with about their opinions and experiences can improve their happiness and quality of life immeasurably.

In cases where friends or family are able to visit only intermittently, or are absent altogether, a live-in carer can be a best friend to the person receiving care. Sharing quality time with an understanding and caring friend is both comforting and therapeutic.

In this capacity, a live-in carer can become a trusted companion with whom to enjoy recreational activities such as trips to the cinema, theatre or social club; take short breaks with; play cards or games or share a hobby with. They may simply be someone that the person receiving care may relax and chat with over a cup of tea.

We arranged Care for our Great Aunt, all her family live away, and we knew that she never wanted to go into a Care Home. She was a very private person but loved her daily and weekly routine. Both us as her family, as well as Kathleen, knew she needs more support, what we didn’t know until we spoke with Bluebird is what that support could look like. They were fantastic from the start, getting to understand Kathleen and her routine and what she loved to do. We thought she would have to give up a lot, but Bluebird just made it happen, whether that be supporting Kathleen to see her friends, and host a coffee morning, or pop out along the coast for Fish and Chips, this is something that we know she lived for and we were fearful that she would lose this if she went into a care home. Bluebird Care even arranged for Kathleen to come and visit family in York, they planned the whole trip. We are forever grateful for Lynn and the team at Bluebird, they have gone above and beyond in the care for Kathleen, we are so glad we opted for live-in care with Bluebird, as I know any other option such as a care home would have been disastrous for Kathleen wellbeing and mental health. We also as a family had peace of mind that she was getting the very best care, as well as living her life the best way she could

Sarah, Bluebird Care Newcastle Customer

We engaged Bluebird Care as our Mum needed extra support around the house, she had been diagnosed with Dementia, and although not advanced, we knew she would struggle to live independently living on her own. We were resigned to the fact that we were going to have to up-root our Mum into a care facility, and that just didn’t sit comfortably with us. We felt that if that happened, our Mum would deteriorate rapidly, we had seen it with other relatives. We had not heard of live-in care until we spoke with Bluebird, it was exactly what we were looking for, and we had comfort straight away that it was what Mum wanted. What was even better, we had more contact with her through Video messaging which was great for mum and our children. Every day is different, and what is so refreshing is The Bluebird team cook up a lot of home-cooked food and Mums favourite meals. Nothing is too much trouble for Bluebird, and they sit down and plan out activities that Mum loves to do, they have even got her back into doing gardening. Big thank you from all of us

Independence, dignity and choice

For many, moving in the later years of life to unfamiliar surroundings can cause significant trauma. However good residential or nursing care is, the institutional nature of it means losing one's independence is almost always inevitable, this can have grave effects on your mental and physical health.

Choosing live in care at home provides a number of key benefits:

  • Stay in control over life for longer
  • Benefit from having your routines, privacy and preferences respected and listened to
  • Keep up with hobbies, interests and clubs in your local community
  • Maintain relationships and family life - seeing friends and family in a relaxed and familiar environment for everyone
  • Use home surroundings to stimulate care - such as the ground-breaking SPECAL method for dementia
  • Keeping the Same GP
  • Keeping your pets

Familiar and safe surroundings

We passionately believe that most people want to stay in their homes for as long as possible. Home is where your belongings, treasures, pets and memories are. Where the family is used to coming to visit and where your community can support you. This is especially important for people living with dementia, as familiarity is hugely important to overall health and well-being.

Live in care makes it possible to continue enjoying these comforts, whilst receiving the support you require.

By choosing live-in care with Bluebird Care South Tyneside, you are choosing to continue living with choice and control, surrounded by your families and communities.

Ensuring that dietary and nutritional needs are met

A balanced diet and the intake of adequate nutrition and hydration are essential for the maintenance of health and wellbeing. As a result of a medical condition, you or your loved one may experience a reduced appetite, a loss of interest in eating or may need assistance with eating.

A live-in carer can help by shopping for groceries, preparing favourite meals which are healthy and nutritious yet respect your food preferences and by making sure that you or your loved one are getting enough to eat and drink.

Understanding nutrition is an essential part of being a live-in carer – some medical conditions require particular diets, or special ways of preparing foods. People with dementia often require diets which are highly colourful, or which they can eat with their fingers ‘on the hoof’. Texture modified diets for people with swallowing difficulties must be prepared to exact specifications, too little or too much pureeing can pose more risks. People living with conditions like MS or cancer may have extremely specific nutritional diets that live-in carers will understand and be able to deliver.

But the most important aspect of dietary needs is the enjoyment of food. A home cooked meal, prepared to your specifications, served in your home, in good company, can do wonders for our sense of wellbeing.
