David’s story: Staying at home, together, with live-in care
A story of keeping a family together at home, with live-in care supporting David every day.
David’s story
David’s home is full of the things that matter most to him. His wife is there, his dogs are close by, and his children and grandchildren visit the place where they have always known him. It is a household where family life carries on around him, with familiar surroundings and regular visits.
In 2021, David had a severe stroke and spent a lengthy time in hospital, and the family faced a future none of them had expected. Coming home, to his wife and to the place he had always known, was what mattered most to David, along with consistent, trusted support in place.

Understanding their needs
After a lengthy hospital stay, the question was how David could come home safely, in the way the family wanted. His daughter, Sophie, is a Director of Bluebird Care South Gloucestershire and has spent many years supporting families through uncertain moments.
She knew the terminology, the processes and the questions to ask. Even so, making the right decisions for her own father felt overwhelming, and it showed her how much harder it can feel for families who have never had to consider care before.
David’s needs were assessed so that his return home could be planned carefully, and live-in care, which began in November 2021, was identified as the right support.
Life with Bluebird Care
David is supported by two live-in Care Experts, Anuthida and Irene, who share his home. Day to day, they do far more than work through a list of tasks. They notice the small things, judge when to step in and when to let David manage something himself, and share the conversation and laughter that make a house feel like a home.
Because a live-in Care Expert becomes part of daily life in someone’s home, matching matters. The office and management team took time to find the right people for David and his household, and they continue to support the Care Experts living with him. They respond as the family’s circumstances change.
For the family, this means a team who answer the phone and offer reassurance when it is needed, and Care Experts who know the person behind the care plan. David’s wife, children and grandchildren continue to visit as they always have, and his dogs remain part of everyday life.
Anuthida and Irene have both become an integral part of the household and of David’s daily care. David stays comfortable and safe, and is treated with dignity at every stage.
Staying at the heart of family life
David has remained at home since leaving hospital, with the same trusted live-in team supporting him since 2021. His family have not had to put their own lives on hold or visit him somewhere unfamiliar. The experience also gave Sophie a daughter’s understanding of live-in care, which she brings to every family who contacts her team. David’s story shows that personalised care can mean keeping a person exactly where they belong: at home, close to the people, pets and surroundings they love.
I thought I understood what it meant to find care for someone you love. When it’s your own family, everything feels so different.
