Real moments, real people at Bluebird Care South Gloucestershire
Joyce and Jim have shared a remarkable life for over 70 years and have been married for 67 of those years. Here is their remarkable Lifetime Love Story.
A fairground hello that turned into forever
They first met at the fairground on 3 August, a bank holiday when the fairground was traditionally set up for the celebrations. Joyce was on the roundabout, and Jim noticed her straight away, thinking how lovely she looked. He parked his motorbike beside her bicycle, struck up a conversation, and asked if she would like to go for a ride, the beginning of a lifelong journey together.
Table tennis & first dates
Joyce was also a keen table tennis player, and Jim thought it would be a good idea to challenge her to a match. Joyce won hands down, a moment they both still smile about. Before marrying, they enjoyed many meals together, along with countless date days and evenings.
He lost the match but won her heart.
Waiting was worth it
Their relationship was tested early on when Jim had to complete his national service, which meant they were apart for two years. Joyce promised she would wait for him until he returned home. Jim earned just one pound a week, and as money was tight, Joyce would give him a shilling each week so he could afford the bus fare to visit her, a small gesture that spoke volumes about their devotion to one another.
Family & forever
Since marrying, Joyce and Jim have always lived together in their own home and went on to raise three daughters. Family has always been incredibly important to them, and over the years their family has grown. They are fortunate to have regular visits and remain very close to their loved ones.
When asked about the highs and lows of their life together, Joyce lovingly joked that Jim sometimes enjoys too many sweets, which makes her worry about his health, although she admits he enjoys them in moderation. On a more serious note, Joyce shared that one of the greatest positives of their marriage is always having someone she can talk to.

Sweet on each other
Jim described Joyce as his constant support, someone who has always been there to guide him, answer his questions, and be his rock. He proudly says that Joyce has always been the strength of their relationship, and he knows when not to interfere and remembers who the boss is.
The rock of my life
As time has gone on, Joyce and Jim have found some day-to-day tasks more challenging than they once were. They now have a live-in carer who stays with them in their home. They have expressed how much this means to them, as it allows them to remain together in the comfort of their own home, cared for by someone who knows them well and looks after their every need.
