Rare Disease Day

Bluebird Care encourages community to get behind ‘Rare Disease Day’

Bluebird Care Sevenoaks is encouraging the local community to get behind ‘Rare Disease Day’ on Friday 28th February. The aim of the day is to raise awareness of rare diseases, their impact on people’s lives and the need for further investment in medical research.

It happens on the 28th February because it’s the rarest day of the year!

A rare disease is any disorder which affects a small minority of the population. These diseases have devastating effects on people and their families, with most rare diseases having no cures and can exist for years, undiagnosed.

This year’s key message is “Rare is many. Rare is strong. Rare is proud.” The theme highlights the fact that there are over 300 million people across the world who have a rare disease. In fact, it is likely that you may know someone who has been affected. The day aims to raise awareness that people living with a rare disease often do not have access to diagnosis, treatment, care and social opportunities. It is important to show support to the rare disease community and advocate for equity and equal opportunities.

Charlotte Gore, Registered Care Manager at Bluebird Care Sevenoaks, commented:

“Supporting and recognising Rare Disease Day is essential. We must do all we can, as a local community, to raise awareness of rare diseases as 5% of the world’s population will be affected by one. 1 in 20 people will develop a rare disease at some point in their life.

We need to take a step towards understanding what rare diseases are and how we can, collectively, help improve people’s lives.”

Bluebird Care is encouraging community groups, businesses and charities to show their support for Rare Disease Day this year. Ideas for events and campaigns can be found online: www.rarediseaseday.org
