Award-winning Bluebird Care Oxford, South & West Oxfordshire is supporting National Cholesterol Month; an initiative by Heart UK which aims to increase awareness of cholesterol and raise funds to help the fight against cholesterol.

Cholesterol is a fatty substance found in the blood which becomes the outer layer of our body cells. It is vital for the normal functioning of the body’s cells. When there is too much cholesterol, this is called high cholesterol. High Cholesterol can cause blockages in the blood vessels which could result in a heart attack or a stroke.

Your chances of having high cholesterol levels increase if you are overweight, not exercising, eating fatty foods, smoking and drinking. It can also be high due to your genes.

Cholesterol levels can be reduced by:

  • Exercising regularly
  • Eating healthily
  • Not smoking
  • Reducing alcohol intake

Heart UK states 6 super foods which actively help reduce cholesterol levels:

  • Fruits and Vegetables
  • Oats and Barley
  • Nuts
  • Soya foods
  • Foods rich in unsaturated fats e.g. avocado, seeds, olive oil, sunflower oil, oily fish
  • Fortified foods that have sterols and stanols added to e.g. certain yoghurts

Robert Mezo Director of Bluebird Care Oxford, South & West Oxfordshire, commented:

“This October, let’s aim to eat a healthier diet, become more active and raise funds to support National Cholesterol Month.

Cholesterol levels tend to increase with age and as most of our customers are of the aging population, it is vital to think about their lifestyles and diet. Bluebird Care Oxford, South & West Oxfordshire is fully supporting Heart UK with their campaign.”
