On Friday 8th May, we were delighted to welcome Rob and Becky, from the Missing Person Investigation Unit (MPIU) at Northamptonshire Police, to the Bluebird Care Northampton Dementia Café for an informative and engaging session about the Herbert Protocol.
The Herbert Protocol is a nationally recognised initiative designed to help support people living with dementia, Alzheimer’s, or other conditions that may cause them to become confused or go missing. During the session, the team explained how completing a Herbert Protocol form in advance can provide police with vital information should a loved one ever go missing.
The form contains important details such as a recent photograph, medical information, daily routines, favourite places, and contact details for family members or carers. Having this information readily available can save valuable time during a search and gives the police a crucial head start in locating a missing person quickly and safely.
Our visitors highlighted how the protocol not only supports emergency services, but also provides reassurance to families and carers, knowing that key information is already prepared should the unexpected happen.
The session prompted thoughtful discussions among attendees, with many recognising the importance of planning ahead and understanding the practical steps that can help keep vulnerable loved ones safe. We are incredibly grateful to the Missing Persons Team for taking the time to visit our Dementia Café and share their expertise with our community.
At Bluebird Care Northampton, we are committed to supporting individuals living with dementia and their families through education, guidance, and community support. Events like these play an important role in raising awareness and helping people feel informed and empowered.
