Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service visit Bluebird Care Dementia Cafe

Community

On Friday 10th April, Bluebird Care Northampton & Daventry were delighted to welcome Neal King from Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service to deliver a safety talk as part of our regular Dementia Café meeting at the Abbey Centre. These sessions are always a highlight in our calendar, bringing together members of the community in a warm, friendly environment where people can connect, share experiences, and learn something new.

Neal’s visit proved to be both engaging and highly informative. He spoke in a clear and accessible way about practical steps we can all take to make our homes safer, particularly for those living with dementia. From simple changes like checking smoke alarms and keeping escape routes clear, to more tailored advice around kitchen safety and reducing trip hazards, there was something valuable for everyone. What stood out most was how relevant and easy-to-implement his suggestions were, leaving many of us feeling empowered to make small but meaningful improvements at home.

By the end of the session, it was clear the talk had made a real impact. Conversations continued over refreshments as attendees reflected on what they had learned and shared their own ideas for safer living. Neal also kindly offered to arrange free home fire safety checks, and we were pleased that five of our guests signed up on the day to take advantage of this fantastic service. It’s reassuring to know that further personalised support will be available to them in their own homes.

We were also very pleased to welcome Ellie, who is currently on placement with the Young Persons with Dementia team while studying to become an Occupational Therapist. Ellie joined us to observe and better understand the role our Dementia Café plays in supporting individuals and families. It was wonderful to have her involved, and we hope she found the experience both insightful and inspiring as she continues her studies.

Events like this highlight the importance of collaboration between local services and professionals. By working together, we can enhance the support available to people living with dementia and their loved ones, helping them to feel safer, more confident, and better connected within their community. We are grateful to Neal and Ellie for taking the time to join us, and we look forward to continuing to build these valuable partnerships in the future.

Don't forget - next month we will be joined by our local Northamptonshire Police force for another safety talk.
