We are all individuals, so we all have our own unique care needs, and at Bluebird Care, we pride ourselves on always having a person-centred approach in the provision of our services.

Personal care is the assistance of a person's daily personal routines, offering support and help in areas such as:

  • Hygiene and appearance
  • Dressing
  • Washing and bathing
  • Medication management
  • Toileting and intimate care
  • Mobility
  • Eating and nutrition
  • Domestic duties

How Do You Define Personal Care 2

What does personal care do?

Personal care is designed to maintain a person's dignity, quality of life and everyday routines.

The sole focus of a personal caregiver is on the person's physical and mental health, and emotional well-being. Personal care goes beyond offering social support, such as shopping and exercise, helping the person being cared for stay clean, hydrated, healthy and happy.

There is, however, no one-size-fits-all, because humans are unique with differing needs and cannot be put into boxes. High-quality personal care is always tailored to a person's own needs and requirements, without negotiation.

How to define high-quality personal care

Not only should personal care always be centred entirely on the individual with a tailored care plan, but it should also provide dignity and comfort to the person.

The person’s dignity and independence are of utmost importance, and at Bluebird Care, our dedicated carers will enable their customer to have as much privacy and independence as they possibly can, whilst providing the expert personal care assistance and support they need.

Bluebird Care’s personal care services emphasise these key values:

  • Privacy
  • Dignity
  • Wellbeing
  • Comfort
  • Support
  • Independence

At Bluebird Care, we offer the highest quality of personal care, and our promises illustrate our dedication to helping your loved one continue to live the life they want.

The importance of privacy in personal care

The Social Care Institute for Excellence states that ‘it is important that privacy is respected in all care settings so that people can maintain their dignity,’ and giving an individual personal space is also crucial to providing dignified personal care.

The individual will always hold full autonomy over their privacy, their identity, values, relationships and beliefs.

When is personal care and support needed?

When somebody cannot maintain their physical or mental health independently, personal care is required to help them, with an individualised plan. The Care Quality Commission states that personal care is ‘for people who are unable to provide it for themselves because of old age, illness or disability.’

Everybody is different – perhaps your loved one has full mental capacity, but mobility issues are causing them problems in maintaining personal hygiene or completing household chores.

Alternatively, if living with dementia, a person may be physically able and mobile, but may need reminding to carry out tasks such as bathing, showering or changing their clothes.

Our Expert Care Givers are fully trained in dementia and Alzheimer’s Care.

The benefits of personal care at home

With domiciliary home care or live-in care, the individual has one-on-one support and companionship care, or 24-hour care, at all times. They can also get the help they need to maintain their dignity and quality of life, whilst continuing their daily routines, such as seeing friends and family, playing games, reading or walking from the comfort of their own home. Our homes are immensely special to us, and being able to have the personal care needed without having to leave is invaluable.

All of our home care and live-in care services offer personalised care plans that are tailored to every individual, and our range of services is extensive – you can discover more information on our services here.
