When Kate Mortimer began working in care, she never imagined it would lead to a career in leadership. Having previously worked in retail, she entered the sector following redundancy and soon discovered work that gave her a real sense of purpose.
Today, Kate is the Registered Manager at Bluebird Care Lewisham & Southwark, having progressed through a variety of care and management roles while completing her Level 2, Level 3 and Level 5 qualifications in Health and Social Care.
Discovering a career in care
Before joining the care sector, Kate had worked as both a Retail Assistant and Sales Assistant. Following redundancy, she decided to try something completely different and became a Care Professional.
Although it wasn’t a career she had originally planned, Kate quickly realised how rewarding it could be. Supporting people in their own homes gave her the opportunity to build meaningful relationships and make a genuine difference to their everyday lives.
End-of-life care was particularly meaningful to Kate. Being able to support someone with dignity and compassion, while also providing reassurance to their family, showed her the importance of high-quality care.
I never imagined that changing careers would lead me here.
Recognising her potential
As Kate gained experience, the people around her began to recognise her leadership potential. When she was encouraged to take on a Supervisor position, her initial reaction was uncertainty.
Kate questioned whether she was ready for the responsibility and almost turned the opportunity down. However, with encouragement from those who believed in her abilities, she decided to take the next step.
It became an important turning point in her career.
Sometimes all it takes is someone believing in you before you believe in yourself.
Building experience and confidence
Kate’s career has taken her through a wide range of roles, giving her valuable experience across both home care and residential care:

Each role helped Kate develop new skills and build her confidence as a care professional and leader. Alongside her practical experience, she completed her Level 2, Level 3 and Level 5 qualifications in Health and Social Care, supported by development opportunities including the Bluebird Care Academy.
Leading and supporting others
As Registered Manager at Bluebird Care Lewisham & Southwark, Kate now uses her experience to support customers, families and colleagues.
Having started her own journey on the frontline, she understands the realities of delivering care and the difference that the right encouragement can make. She is passionate about helping others recognise their strengths, develop their skills and explore opportunities they may not yet see in themselves.
Kate’s journey shows that a career in care doesn’t need to follow a set path. An opportunity that initially feels daunting could become the beginning of something incredibly rewarding.
