There are around 850,000 people in the UK with dementia, with over 40,000 under the age of 65. 1 in 6 people over the age of 80 will develop dementia.

Dementia symptoms include memory loss, mental confusion, mood changes and difficulty with day-to-day tasks. There are many types of dementia, the most common being Alzheimer’s Disease.

The Alzheimer’s Society is the UK’s leading charity for dementia, providing information and support to individuals as well as funding vital research with the hope to create lasting change for everyone affected by dementia.

This year’s theme for Dementia Action Week is A Little Does A Lot, which encourages people to do social activities with friends and family living with dementia. Due to the current coronavirus outbreak and the social distancing guidelines, online and digital activities can be done with friends and family instead.

There are virtual ways to still connect with loved ones such as a phone call or a text.

Jay Patel, Director of Bluebird Care Merton, said:

“In light of the coronavirus pandemic, we must remember those who are at home, living with dementia.

We must not forget that a simple phone call, a video call, an online game or puzzle can make so much difference to a person’s day. A little does a lot."
