Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia and can affect memory, thinking, communication and everyday activities. As the condition progresses, familiar surroundings, consistent routines and the right support can help you or someone you love remain comfortable and independent at home.

At Bluebird Care Merton, personalised Alzheimer’s care is provided in the familiarity of home, with support adapted around you or someone you love and changing needs. This can include assistance with personal care and daily routines, companionship, medication reminders, walks and practical help around the home.

Supporting people living with dementia

Dementia is not a normal part of ageing. It is an umbrella term for a range of conditions that affect how the brain works, with Alzheimer’s being the most common type. Dementia can affect people in different ways, with symptoms potentially affecting memory, communication, concentration, behaviour and the ability to manage everyday activities.

There is currently no cure for most types of dementia, although treatment and appropriate support can help you or someone you love manage symptoms and maintain quality of life. As the condition progresses, the level of support you or someone you love needs may also change, making personalised care increasingly important.

Signs to look out for

The early signs of dementia can vary depending on the person and the type of dementia they have. Some changes may be subtle at first, but it can be helpful to take note when they become more frequent or begin to affect everyday life.

  • Increasing difficulty remembering recent conversations, names or events
  • Frequently misplacing belongings or struggling to remember where they have been put
  • Becoming confused about dates, times or familiar places
  • Finding it harder to follow conversations or find the right words
  • Difficulty completing familiar everyday tasks
  • Changes in judgement, mood or behaviour
  • Losing interest in hobbies, social activities or spending time with others
  • Difficulty managing household tasks, shopping or preparing meals
  • Changes in coordination, balance or spatial awareness

Not every change means someone has dementia, and some symptoms can have other causes. If you notice noticeable or persistent changes in yourself or someone you love, speaking to a GP can help identify what may be causing them.

Bluebird Care and Alzheimer’s Society

Bluebird Care is a proud partner of Alzheimer’s Society, an incredible charity that supports people living with dementia while funding life-changing research.

In June 2024, Bluebird Care committed to becoming the UK’s leading specialist dementia care provider in the home, alongside pledging £50,000 to Alzheimer’s Society. With a special appearance from celebrity ambassador Dame Arlene Phillips, the Bluebird Care team announced the pledge as part of its commitment to supporting people living with dementia and their families.

Many people wrongly assume that dementia is simply a normal part of ageing, but this is not the case. Dementia is a complex condition, and although the causes of some forms are not yet fully understood, it is not an inevitable part of growing older. Raising awareness and improving understanding are important steps towards ensuring people living with dementia receive appropriate support.

Together, Bluebird Care and Alzheimer’s Society are working towards a world that better understands dementia and improves the lives of people living with the condition.
