Days out and local places around Market Harborough & Oadby
A change of scene matters as much as the right care plan, and Market Harborough and Oadby both have easy, low effort options close by.
Welland Park, right in the centre of Market Harborough, is the obvious starting point. It's the town's largest park, with tree lined paths, plenty of benches, a café for a proper sit down, and free guided Healthy Walks every Monday at noon and Wednesday at 10am, finishing back at the café with tea and coffee. It's a good option even for someone who wouldn't manage a long walk, since the paths are flat and there's always somewhere nearby to rest.
Market Harborough town centre itself is worth a mention too. The indoor market, once named Britain's Best Small Indoor Market, makes for a short, sheltered outing with plenty to look at, and there are cafés and places to eat within easy reach if a longer stop is wanted. For something further out, Foxton Locks is a well known local landmark, a flight of historic canal locks with level paths and a pub at the top, and it draws people back again and again rather than being a one off visit.
Oadby has its own quieter spots. Brocks Hill Country Park offers woodland, meadows and ponds along gentle trails, with a visitor centre and café on site, and it tends to be less busy than the bigger parks nearby. The University of Leicester Botanic Garden, also in Oadby, spans 16 acres of themed gardens, including a restored Edwardian garden and a tropical glasshouse, and it's a genuinely peaceful place for a slow wander regardless of the weather.
Local support around Market Harborough & Oadby
Market Harborough has a well established dementia support network worth knowing about alongside any care arrangement. Dementia Harborough runs a dementia café along with a singing for memories group, giving people living with dementia and their carers a relaxed place to meet others in the same situation. Age UK also runs a Memory Café at Market Harborough Methodist Church on the 4th Wednesday of the month, and places are usually booked in advance rather than just turning up on the day.
For anything more clinical, Market Harborough Admiral Nurse clinics run on the last Friday of the month at the Medical Centre, and on the first Monday of the month at Old School Surgery in Kibworth, giving families access to a dementia specialist nurse without needing a hospital referral. Support for Carers also runs a community transport scheme covering the Harborough district, which is worth knowing about for anyone whose own mobility, or a loved one's, makes getting to appointments or groups harder than it should be.
We often point families toward these groups around Market Harborough & Oadby alongside our own care, because company, routine and a reason to leave the house make a real difference to how someone copes, whether that's the person receiving care or the family member organising it. Knowing these options exist, even before they're needed, tends to make the whole process feel less daunting when the time comes.
We hope you find this useful. If any of this raises a question about what care at home could look like for your own family, our home care and live-in care pages set out how we work and what's included, and our local pricing page has current costs so you're not going in blind. Otherwise, get in touch and we can talk through what would actually help, for you or a loved one in Market Harborough, Oadby or one of the surrounding villages.
