Sam's Story - Live-in Care Worker

Published: 14/04/2015

I have worked with Bluebird Care for the past four months as a live-in Care Worker. This means that I live with customers in their homes to help with a variety of daily tasks as needed as well as being there to give peace of mind that someone is always there.

I have always been passionate about being a carer since I was a girl. I grew up in South Africa and had a challenging early part of my life. It was realizing that I wanted to work with people and give back to them that led my childhood passion to be a carer to become a reality.

Before I arrived in England, I supported a friend who was wheelchair-bound and unable to speak without his computer keyboard that spoke what he typed. I loved supporting him and it was hard to leave in 2002 when I needed to move.

Before working with Bluebird Care, I worked in a Care Home as a Care Assistant and also helped out in the kitchens. I did enjoy this, however it was not quite right for me and I wanted to focus more on spending time with customers out of a Care Home environment.

I have worked with Bluebird Care for the past four months as a live-in Care Worker. This means that I live with customers in their homes to help with a variety of daily tasks as needed as well as being there to give peace of mind that someone is always there.

I currently live with one customer who has had live-in care following a number of falls. I love the time I spend with her and help with anything she needs including going, out shopping and trips-out, cooking, cleaning and even pruning the roses!

As well as supporting with various daily tasks, my customer knows that there is always someone there for her to provide companionship and has the freedom to ask for support with whatever she needs.

Without live-in care, she would need to move into a Care Home, so me being there helps her to remain in her own home for longer as well as giving her son peace of mind. This is something that really gives me a good sense of job satisfaction!
