The Dementia Friends programme is the biggest ever initiative to change people's perceptions of dementia. It aims to transform the way the nation thinks, acts and talks about the condition.

Information sessions are led by our Community Liaison Manager, Nathan and give participants the opportunity learn more about dementia and how they can help to create dementia friendly communities.

Nathan explained:
I ran a couple of open sessions in the community by sending round invitations and things kind of snowballed with lots of invitations from community groups, voluntary organisations and even our local health trust inviting me to speak.

The sessions are great fun and I certainly think that I learn as much as those who attend. They are very informal and practical, with lots of time given to sharing experiences.

I now run regular sessions for our local Age UK who have a befriending service and do an incredible job in supporting over 100 people in the community, many of whom are living with dementia.

I have had personal experiences of dementia with both my grandparents living with the disease so the sessions are my way of giving back to the community.

My goal is now to increase the number of dementia friends to beat 450 in 2019!
