Bluebird Care Lytham & Fylde marks World Alzheimer's Month by helping families find support

September is World Alzheimer’s Month, an opportunity to raise awareness, challenge misconceptions and ensure that people affected by dementia know where they can turn for support. World Alzheimer’s Day also takes place on 21 September each year.

Receiving a dementia diagnosis can bring many questions for individuals and their families. You may be unsure about what happens next, what support is available or how your loved one’s needs might change over time. However, the right information and assistance can help everyone feel more prepared and less alone.

Helping someone live well with dementia

Although dementia can affect memory, communication and everyday tasks, a diagnosis does not mean that someone must immediately give up their independence.

Familiar surroundings, established routines and meaningful activities can all provide reassurance. Small adjustments around the home, gentle reminders and regular companionship may also help someone continue doing the things they enjoy.

Every person’s experience of dementia is different, so support should always be shaped around the individual, their preferences and their life story.

Finding dementia support locally

Families in Lytham, St Annes and the wider Fylde area can speak to their GP if they are concerned about changes in a loved one’s memory or behaviour. A GP can carry out initial checks and, where appropriate, make a referral to a local memory assessment service.

Further information and guidance are also available through organisations including Alzheimer’s Society and Dementia UK. Dementia UK’s Admiral Nurses provide specialist advice to families affected by dementia, including support with changing needs, difficult decisions and planning for the future.

How care at home can help

Professional care at home can provide practical assistance while enabling someone to remain in familiar surroundings.

Depending on the person’s needs, this could include:

  • Companionship and reassurance
  • Support with meals and medication
  • Help with personal care and daily routines
  • Accompaniment to appointments or social activities
  • Respite and reassurance for family carers
  • More regular or ongoing support as needs change

At Bluebird Care Lytham & Fylde, we take time to understand each person as an individual. Our care is designed around their routines, interests and preferences, helping them feel comfortable, respected and in control.

We also understand that dementia affects the whole family. Our team can provide reassurance and dependable support, giving relatives greater confidence that their loved one is receiving compassionate care at home.
