Dementia Champion and Director of Bluebird Care Liverpool, David Cowan, is running a Dementia Friends session at Dobbies Garden Centre on Speke Hall Avenue, Speke, to promote Dementia Awareness Week.

Please join him at 12.00 on Friday 22nd May from 12.00-1.00 for an interactive session to learn more about dementia and the actions we can all take to help create a more dementia-friendly community in Liverpool.

Dementia Friends is a social action movement led by Alzheimer’s Society as one strand of its work to create Dementia Friendly Communities. This movement is funded by the Department of Health and the Cabinet Office.

The scale of the problem:
  • 670,000 people in England are living with dementia
  • 61% of people with dementia feel lonely and 44% have lost friends
  • By 2021 there will be 1 million people living with dementia

Goal: To raise awareness of dementia and to help people with dementia feel part of the community.

How: Improving the understanding of dementia for 1 million people and inspiring them to take action.

Focus: Attitudinal/behavioural change at an individual level to enable social change. We want to change the way people think, speak and act.

How does it work?
Dementia Friends is a cascade model. The Dementia Friends team run regular free Champion training sessions all over England. They train Champions who then go out into their communities, as volunteers, and create Dementia Friends.

David Cowan is one of those volunteers. He became a volunteer in 2014 and has run sessions at Business First in Speke, St. Mary’s Church in West Derby, and at All Saints Church in Childwall.

Each session lasts up to 1 hour, is interactive, engaging, and participants learn five things everyone should know about dementia.

If you would like to speak to David about running a group session you can contact him on 0151 448 2785.
