Make May Purple

Bluebird Care Lewisham & Southwark is supporting the Stroke Association’s Make May Purple campaign

This May, Bluebird Care Lewisham and Southwark is supporting the Stroke Association’s annual stroke awareness month, Make May Purple.

The campaign for this year will focus on “Save Research”. It aims to highlight the need to raise invaluable funds so stroke research can continue. The Stroke Association’s research budget has been halved due to a decrease in charitable income since the start of 2020 and they are calling for people to donate and help fund vital research.

The Stroke Association is the UK’s leading stroke charity who strongly believe strokes can and should be prevented, however this health challenge does not receive the attention or funding it requires. The organisation works directly with stroke survivors and their families, health and social care professionals and scientists and researchers.

A stroke occurs when blood supply to part of the brain is cut off, this causes that area of the brain to shut down and brain cells begin to die. This can result in brain injury, disability and in some cases death.

The main stroke symptoms can be remembered using the word FAST:

  • Face – one side of the face is drooping
  • Arms – arm weakness and numbness
  • Speech – speech and understanding difficulties
  • Time – time to call 999 immediately

Kate Mortimer, Registered Care Manager at Bluebird Care Lewisham & Southwark, said:

“A stroke can happen in an instant, but the damage can last a lifetime, making it so important to promote the work of the Stroke Association. The association provides vital support and research to survivors and their families.

Since the start of the decade, many charities have seen a decrease in funding – making it harder for those like the Stroke Association to carry out their life saving work. Why not get involved in the Make May Purple campaign and see how you can make a difference?”
