Why Dementia Awareness Matters for Families and Communities

Community

A little more understanding can change everything

On 15th July, we brought the Virtual Dementia Experience Bus to our communities in Leeds and Harrogate.

For our Bluebird Care Leeds North team, it was an opportunity to strengthen the way we support people living with dementia across North Leeds and the surrounding area. We invited local families, businesses and members of the wider community to take part, free of charge.

Because dementia is about much more than memory loss. It can affect how someone sees and hears what is happening around them. How they process information. How they communicate. And how safe or confident they feel doing things that once came naturally.

The sensory experience offered a powerful insight into some of these challenges and encouraged everyone who took part to think differently about patience, reassurance and communication.

Bringing greater dementia awareness to Leeds

People living with dementia are part of our families and our local communities. They are our parents, grandparents, partners, friends and neighbours.

That is why raising awareness beyond our own service matters to us.

We were delighted to welcome County Deputy Mayor, Councillor Chrissy Holmes, who joined us and took part in the experience herself. Local people and neighbouring businesses also came along, sharing their thoughts and leaving with a deeper understanding of what living with dementia may sometimes feel like.

A little more understanding can help someone feel less confused, less judged and more included.

Training that changes the way we care

After the community sessions, our entire Bluebird Care Leeds North team took part in more detailed dementia training.

Everyone who joins us becomes an official Dementia Friend at the beginning of their employment. Our Care Experts also receive face to face dementia refresher training at least once every year, and we have Dementia Champions within our team who have completed additional specialist training.

But good dementia care is not only about knowledge.

It is about how we make someone feel. It might mean slowing down and giving someone more time to respond. Offering one clear choice rather than several. Explaining what is happening before providing support. Or recognising that someone who appears resistant may actually feel frightened or overwhelmed.

These may seem like small things. To someone living with dementia, they can make an enormous difference.

When someone you love needs more support

A dementia diagnosis can feel frightening for the whole family. You may be worrying about whether your loved one is eating properly, taking their medication, staying safe or becoming lonely. Perhaps you are trying to balance their care with work, children, your own home and everything else life asks of you.

You might live miles away. Or you might live close by but still feel that you can never do enough. Asking for help does not mean you are letting your loved one down. It means you want them to have the right support, you don't have to wait until there is a crisis.

Helping your loved one live well at home

  • Home care can begin with something small.
  • A friendly visit and a cup of tea.
  • Support with meals or medication.
  • Help with washing and dressing.
  • Companionship, conversation and meaningful activities.
  • A reassuring visit at the time of day when things feel most difficult.

Our Care Experts take the time to understand the person behind the diagnosis. Their routines, preferences, memories and the things that help them feel safe and most like themselves.

With the right support, someone living with dementia can continue enjoying familiar surroundings, meaningful moments and as much independence as possible.

Home is where their favourite chair is. Where the family photographs are on the wall. Where the garden, neighbours and daily routines feel familiar.

That sense of home can be incredibly reassuring.

We're here for you too

Caring for someone you love can slowly change your relationship. Visits become about meals, medication, appointments and practical jobs. You can begin to feel more like the person responsible for everything than their daughter, son, partner or grandchild.

The right care can take some of that pressure away.

Our team can help with practical support, giving you more time to sit together, talk, laugh and simply be family again.
