How to identify early signs of dementia

A few ways to help identify early signs of dementia

Noticing changes in the memory or behaviour of someone you love can be worrying. While occasional forgetfulness can be a normal part of getting older, there are some changes that may indicate that a person needs further support or medical advice.

Understanding some of the early signs of dementia can help families recognise when something may have changed and take the next steps sooner.

What are the early signs of dementia?

Dementia can affect people differently, and symptoms may develop gradually. Some changes to look out for can include:

  • Increasing memory problems – particularly forgetting recent conversations, appointments or events.
  • Difficulty completing familiar tasks – everyday activities that were previously straightforward may become more challenging.
  • Confusion about time or place – someone may become unsure of the date, where they are or how they got somewhere.
  • Changes in communication – finding the right words or following a conversation may become more difficult.
  • Changes in mood or personality – you might notice increased anxiety, withdrawal, frustration or behaviour that seems unusual for that person.
  • Difficulty making decisions – managing money, organising appointments or planning everyday activities can sometimes become harder.

Experiencing one or more of these changes does not necessarily mean someone has dementia. There can be many causes of memory or behavioural changes, so speaking to a GP is an important first step if you have concerns.

Helping someone remain independent at home

With the right support, many people living with dementia can continue enjoying a fulfilling life in familiar surroundings.
