Lancaster residents encouraged to book their flu vaccination ahead of winter

Eligible people across Lancaster, Morecambe and South Cumbria are being encouraged to book their flu vaccination as the NHS prepares for the colder months.

The seasonal vaccination programme has begun earlier this year, helping those most at risk protect themselves before flu begins circulating more widely.

Who is eligible for a flu vaccination?

Flu can cause serious illness, particularly among older adults and people living with certain long-term health conditions.

From 1 October, the groups eligible for a free NHS flu vaccination include:

  • People aged 65 and over
  • Adults in clinical risk groups
  • Care home residents
  • Unpaid carers
  • People who live with someone who has a weakened immune system
  • Frontline health and social care workers

Pregnant women and eligible children are also being invited for their vaccinations, with most children offered a quick nasal-spray vaccine.

Eligible residents may receive an invitation through their GP practice, the NHS App or by letter. Vaccinations will be available from GP surgeries and participating pharmacies across Lancaster, Morecambe and the surrounding area.

Why is the flu vaccination important?

Flu is more than a heavy cold. For vulnerable people, it can lead to serious respiratory complications and hospital treatment.

Vaccination can reduce the risk of becoming seriously unwell and help protect relatives, friends and other vulnerable members of the community. It can also help ease pressure on local NHS services during the busy winter period.

The NHS advises eligible people to arrange their vaccination at the earliest opportunity rather than waiting until flu begins spreading.

Supporting an older loved one this winter

Families can help an older or vulnerable relative prepare for winter by checking whether they are eligible, helping them arrange an appointment and making sure they have suitable transport or support on the day.

This is also a useful time to check that repeat prescriptions are ordered, the home is warm and safe, and important contact numbers are easy to find.

At Bluebird Care Lancaster & South Lakeland, our care experts support customers to remain safe, comfortable and independent in their own homes. Depending on an individual’s care plan, this can include medication reminders, companionship and assistance attending healthcare appointments.

If you are concerned about how an older loved one will manage during the colder months, our friendly team is available to discuss how care at home could help.
